Major Functions of Search Engines (Role and Use of Search Engine)
Crawling
Crawling is the first step performed by Google or other search engines to discover a website and its content.
The search engines send a team of bots (called crawlers or spiders) to look out for updated content on websites. The content can be in the form of a web page, blog post, image, video, PDF, etc.
Indexing
After crawling, the search engines process and organize the websites and content in an index, which is a massive database of millions of web URLs. If a URL has been indexed, it is in the running mode and is appearing in the search results.
Ranking
When a search is made by the user, the search engines respond by showing the indexed content on SERP.
On the basis of search query and relevancy of the content on websites, the search engines arrange the content that best serves the user’s query. This arrangement of content on SERP is called ranking.
This means that the higher the ranking of a website, the more traffic it gets.
