Internet of Things (IoT) Tutorial

What Are Characteristics and Features of IoT Technology?

IoT Features and Characteristics

The Internet of Things comprises a heterogeneous network set that allows these objects to communicate. Among the best known are the cellular networks of historical telecom operators, enabling objects equipped with an M2M SIM card to upload and send data.

In addition, you will find the LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) in full emergence, notably with LoRa (Long Range) technique. Long-range low-speed networks are protocols dedicated to communications between objects. And so, other technologies are also used, such as Narrow Band or LTE-m.

IoT makes objects intelligent with data as data is captured and transformed into smart data. The analysis of data related to temperature, vibration, humidity, etc. helps in making data-driven decisions.

Features of IoT Technology

It is with this objective that connected objects are:

  • Instrumented: Collect and integrate data in real-time

  • Interconnected: Shared using a wireless network to other information systems

Intelligence is analyzed and enriched to help users, companies, and institutions make decisions.

  • Thing

"Things" are physical elements with integrated sensors connected to the Internet. These objects send telemetry data (for example, when a car passes by on a freeway using motion or pressure sensors).

  • Insight

These are the results of processing and analyzing the raw data sent by Things. For example: by calculating the number of cars that pass per minute, we can deduce the traffic conditions on a highway.

  • Actions

This is the automated or manual response to information reported by Insight. For example, if Insight shows traffic jams, alerts can be sent to various systems such as highway bulletin boards or the various navigation applications used by motorists.
